Kanto Starters

Upon Reaching the Luminose City, you can grab yourself the 2nd starter Pokemon, that is the Kanto Starter!
We probably haven't seen them since Pokemon Red/Blue/Green and Fire Red/Leaf Green. Now is the time for Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle to shine again in Kalos region, with the new power that is introduced in Gen 6, the Mega Evolution. Still not sure which one to take among the 3?  Then here is your reference that might help you to decide your 2nd starter!

Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur can evolve to Venusaur that is a Grass/Poison type pokemon. You might also want to take note that before even evolving to Venusaur, Bulbasaur is already a Grass/Poison type Pokemon. It is the only starter Pokemon that has dual type in basic stage. Venusaur evolution line has a pretty solid Special Attack and Special Defense but fairly average for all other stat.

Prior to Gen6, Poison is pretty useless attack type as the type that weak against Poison is not many, which is Grass type ONLY, and Steel is totally immune to Poison type moves. However, with the newly added Fairy type, which is weak against ONLY poison and steel type moves, poison type has become slightly useful when using it in the battle.

After it evolves into Venusaur at Level 32, he can learn a pretty strong grass move that is the Petal Dance. Petal Dance will keep attacking the opponent 2-3 turns with 120 base power. However, the user will become confused afterwards. Since you can have the choice to switch out your battling Pokemon after you defeat each of your opponent pokemon in-game, you can just switch it out Venusaur to another Pokemon to cure the confusion status before sendoing it out again.

As for Venusaur moveset, he can learn alot of Special Condition move such as Sleep powder which is very useful for catching pokemon, Stun Spore which put opponent into paralyzed while reducing opponent's speed to cover Venusaur's average speed.  Despite being a part of Poison type Pokemon, it is quite sad that Bulbasaur (even as Venusaur) can't learn any Poison type attack (except for Poison Powder) by himself. However, before you reach the second gym, you can get Venoshock TM and teach it to your Bulbasaur evolution line. As you proceed further, you can get yourself a Sludge Bomb TM which is a Poison powerful attack.Besides that, Venusaur can't really learn a lot of good move from TM to cover his weakness unlike the other 2 starters.

Mega Venusaur

When Venusaur evolve into Mega Venusaur, he will increase his defense significantly and also slightly increase his Special Defense and special attack. There is no change in its speed. However, what make Mega Venusaur useful is its ability. From Overgrow (which increase Grass type move 50% when Venusaur's HP is below 1/3) to Thick fat, which is able to reduce Fire and Ice moves damage receive by Mega Venasaur. Due to the new ability, Venasaur will now be able to take x1 damage from Fire and Ice moves damage instead of x2 (super effective) damage. Meaning to say now Mega Venusaur only weak against Flying type and Psychic type moves! Only 2 out of the 18 types!

It is also worth to mention that by increasing the Defense and Special defense for Mega Venusaur and its new ability, Venusaur can now become a tanker. Venuasur can endure some hits before he get down although this is compensate by its average speed. His High special attacker also can also OTK a lot of opponent in-game except for Pokemon that resists it. If you really want a tanker, you may consider to go with Mega Venusaur.

Charmander

Charmander, a lizard like Pokemon which will then evolve to a Dragon-like Pokemon, Charizard which has Flying type as its secondary type. Due to its Fire/Flying typing, this poor lizard has x4 weakness to Rock, which means Rock type attack can easily OTK him. Worse still, there's quite a number of non-Rock type Pokemon that can learn rock type move, especially Fighting type pokemon. However, look at the bright side, with flying type, Charizard is immue to Ground type attack which is usually a weakness for Fire type is pokemon. This is quite handful because the popular Earthquake (Ground type move) will not touch it.

Charizard is one of the most popular Pokemon probably due to its look. Appearance aside, why not we look at its stat for now? Charizard has a decent Speed and Special attack, but fairly low defense while the other stats are quite average.

Although being part of flying type Pokemon, the only Flying type move that Charizard can learn is Wing attack, which will has low attack base (only 60) and not to mention that Chazird has higher Sp.ATk compared to its Atk. (Note: Wing attack is Physical move). However, Charizard can learn Air Slash through move relearner. Which mean you will need to bring a heart scale to Dendemille town (which is after the 6th gym) to teach your Charizard this move. This Special attack move has a higher attack base and perfectly match Charizard which is a Special attacker. It is also possible to make opponent flinch for one turn. Sweet!
As usual, as a fire type Pokemon, Charizard can learn Flamethrower, which is very powerful fire attack that can knock out a lot of pokemons as long as they don't resist fire attack. Charizard can also access to Heatwave, which has higher attack power. It can hit all opponent in Double battle but compensate with a lower accuracy, which is 90% compare to Flamethrower (100%).

As for TM, Charizard can learn Solarbeam, which has high attack base grass type move that can be used to counter Water type and Rock type Pokemon. Even without STAB, Charizard is able to knock off most Water and Rock Pokemon in one shot. Roost is also helpful move to recover Charizard's HP up to 1/2. However it will take off Charizard's Flying type in return. So be careful when your opponent can Ground type attack as it will hit Charizard very hard due to its Fire type.

Along with Mewtwo, Charizard is the only two Pokemon that can access to two types of Mega evolution. You can get Charizardite X in Pokemon X and Charizardite in Pokemon Y. So indirectly you can ONLY use Charizard X in Pokemon X and Charizard Y in Pokemon Y. However you can still trade the stone from another version, if you can get one. ;)

Mega Charizard X
After evolve to Mega Charizard X, it will greatly increase its Attack stat and slightly increase on its Sp.Atk and defense stat. Interesting enough, Nintendo finally grants the wish of the fans. The typing of Charizard becomes Fire/Dragon instead of Fire/Flying. Well, the typing is good since now Charizard can get rid of its x4 Rock weakness, even though there is still x2. Mega Charizard X will also say good bye to its Water and Lighting weakness. However, its is now weak to Dragon.

Mega Charizard X has the same amount of base stat for both Attack and Sp.Atk which is pretty waste due to its ability, Tough Claw. Contact move used by Mega Charizard X is increase by 30% (from what i heard, still haven't confirm the amount). This ability obviously make it as a Physical attacker, which means there's a waste of 130 points on its Sp.Atk stat.

Mega Charizard X can use Dragon Claw for STAB, and with its ability Touch Claw, it can hit even harder!
Not only that, Charizard also can access to Flare Blitz which is one of the most powerful fire type attack, with its high power base (130) and ability, it will hit very hard just like a beast! Mega Charizard X can also learn Earthquake (Note: Keep in mind it's Physical attack but it does not make contact, so Tough claw won't work) and Shadow Claw through TM. If you think the Attack for Mega Charizard X is still not enough, maybe you can try Sword Dance to increase its atk stage twice!

Mega Charizard Y
After evolve to Mega Charizard Y, its Sp.Atk will dramatically increase to the point it is on par with normal Mewtwo. Just imagine how beastly is Mega Charizard Y. Sp.Atk aside, the Attack and Sp.Def of Charizard also increase slightly. Sadly, there's no increase in speed for Charizard.

Well, this did not bring Charizard down, with its new ability, Drought, it will create free Sunny Day when you Mega evolve it. Sunny Day will increase 50% for fire attacks and decrease 50% for water type attacks which is very helpful for Charizard. Not only that, Charizard can unleash Solarbeam the turn it uses without any charging! Basically, Mega Charizard Y can almost OTK almost any same-level Pokemon in game provided you choose correct attack.

Squirtle

A turtle-like Pokemon that will eventually evolve into Blastoise, which is a pure Water type pokemon. This is the only starter among the 3 Kanto starter is pure type, meaning to say it does not have a secondary type which has its good and bad. The Good thing is Blastoise is only weak against Grass and Electric types, while the bad thing is it kinda limits Blastoise's moveset and cause it to be lack of flexibility. Blastoise is a defensive Pokemon with high defense and Sp.Def, but in return, he has low attack and speed compared to the other two.

Blastoise can learn very limited move set by itself as almost all of its move set is water-based. Surprisingly though, Blastoise can learn Flash Cannon, which can be used to counter the new Fairy type Pokemon which is only weak to Steel and Poison types, through move relearner. Flash Cannon has a fairy high power base too!  TM wise, like other Water type Pokemon, Blastoise can access to Ice Beam which can counter Grass type Pokemon. You might want to try Focus Blast, which can be used to hit Normal type Pokemon. Focus Blast has a very high power base but has low accuracy. Blastoise can also learn Rain Dance to increase water type moves by 50% while decreasing Fire type moves 50%. Personally I think it is not really that useful. First of all, Blastoise itself is able to resist Fire type moves, so it is quite meaningless to decrease it even further. Also, Blastoise might want to use its turn to attack instead of set up the rain weather due to its low speed. Thunder will also have 100% accuracy in rain which will indirectly help your opponent to knock out Blastoise even easier.

Mega Blastoise

After Mega evolve to Mega Blastoise, Blastoise will dramatically increase in its Special Attack and slightly increase the other stats except for Speed. Mega Blastoise will also gain a new ability, Mega Launcher. Mega Launcher increase Mega Blastoise "Pulse" moves by 50%. The good thing is Blastoise can access to Dark Pulse. 50% makes a huge difference as it indirectly gives Mega Blastoise STAB when using Dark Pulse. As for water type moves, Mega Blastoise can learn Water Pulse by itself or Surf through HM. Both has its own strength and weakness. Power wise, it is same due to Water Pulse power base increased by 50% (from 60 to 90), which is same to Surf. The good things for Water Pulse is that it has a chance to make opponent confuse while surf can hit all opponent in horde or even double battle (Note: Be aware that it will also hit your ally in double battle).

Version Exclusives

VS

Still having difficulty deciding which version to get? Then here is your place to make your decision. The main thing you want to look at is probably your main legendary Pokemon, Xerneas or Yvetal. The second thing you should pay attention is the Mega Stones. These things can't be easily get, but the other pokemons can be easily trade from the GTS! So make your decision clear here!

Old Pokemon for X
Aggron evolution line
Armarldo evolution line
Cradily evolution line
Houndoom evolution line
Mightyena evolution line
Pinsir
Sawk
Starmie evolution line

New Pokemon for X
Clawitzer evolution line
Slurpuff evolution line
Xerneas

Mega Stone For X
Charizard X
Manetric
Mewtwo X
Pinsir
Tyranitar

Old Pokemon for Y
Cloyster evolution line
Heracross
Kabutops evolution line
Liepard evolution line
Manetric evolution line
Omastar evolution
Throh
Tyranitar evolution line

New Pokemon for Y
Aromatisse evolution line
Dragalge evolution line
Yveltal

Mega Stone for Y
Aggron
Charizard Y
Heracross
Houndoom
Mewtwo Y

If you notice, Houndoom and Aggron can be found in Pokemon X while Manetric and Tyranitar can only be found on Pokemon Y. However, their mega stone is only given in the other version. To make it simple, you can have Houndoom and Aggron but you can't mega evolve without getting the stone from Y. Same goes to Tyranitar and Manetric in Y version too. Well, nothing to be sad though. You still can trade the Pokemon you want from GTS or maybe from your friends who are playing different version with you. Or maybe just get both games? Lol.

Starter Pokemons

Chespin the Grass Type Pokemon

A mole-like Pokemon which will later evolve into Chesnaught (Grass/Fighting). Personally, I think Chespin is the hardest Starter to use among the three. The first gym you will face is the Bug gym and Chespin will surely have a hard time when challenging the first gym. Chespin family line focus on high atk and has a pretty solid def, but not special def though. Its speed is average. Meaning to say, Chesnaught will be outspeed by most opponents unless its level is higher than them.

As for typing, Chesnaught have a lot of weakness. That's Fire, Ice, Poison, Bug, and Flying. Worst part is, taking Fighting as a secondary type, his weakness to Flying is x4. Which mean, most Flying type move can One Hit KO him even if his Def is high. However, Chesnaught can use Grass and Fighting moves which can hit a lot of opponents hard. Grass type move is very useful against common types such as Ground, Rock and Water, while Fighting type is useful against Normal type which is very common in game.

For moveset, Chesnaught have Seed bomb and Wood hammer as his Grass move. Both are also pretty solid moves. Wood hammer can hit harder but in return Chesnaught will eat the recoil damage for each attack.
For Fighting move, Chesnaught can only use Hammer Arm which also hits pretty hard but will reduce its speed after he attacks. You might not want to bother about the drawback as its speed isn't that fast to begin with. Or maybe, you can teach Chesnaught Brick Break TM as a replacement
.
Other moves Chesnaught can learn is:

  • Body slam- A Normal type move which is quite strong and have a additional effect that make opponent paralyzed. (Since paralyzed can slowed down opponent Pokemon speed by 75%)
  • Bulk up- Increase his attack and defense by 1 stage. (which is 50%)
  • Spiky Shield- Chesnaught Signature move. It works like Protect which is a priority move which protect Chesnaught for 1 turn but it gives additional 1/8 damage to opponent if the opponent uses Physical attack.
  • Giga Impact- Physical version of Hyper Beam. Same with Hyper beam, it needs recharge one turn afterward.
Technical machine

  • Earthquake- Pretty solid damage that can counter your nightmare, Fire type Pokemons.
  • Power up punch- Another alternative fighting move if you don't like Brick break or even Hammer arm. This will increase Cheanaught Attack each time he uses the move.
  • Dragon Claw- Use to counter the almighty Dragon typw which can resists Grass moves.

Fennekin the Fire Type Pokemon

Fennekin, this fox-like Pokemon will later evolve into Delphox, which is a Mage-like Pokemon that has Psychic type as his secondary type. This makes its Fire/Psychic types combination to be interesting. Delphox has a pretty solid Special Attack, Special defense and Speed stat while the other 3 stat are below average.

I would say that Fennekin is the most easy to use among the 3 starters. This is because 4 out of 8 gyms are weak against Delphox, which is the 1st gym Bug, 3rd gym Fighting (assuming that you evolve Braixen to Delphox at this point which is not hard to achieve), the 4th gym Grass, and the last gym Ice. Moreover, there are 2 other gyms which are not effective against Delphox, that is the 6th gym Fairy and 7th gym Psychic. Both of these gyms deal less damage to Delphox as it resists them while Delphox can still deal normal damage to them (not super effective though). This is due to Delphox resists Fairy type (due to Fire type) and Psychic type(due to Psychic type). The hardest Gym for Fennekin should be 2nd, that is the Rock type gym which can hit Fennekin/Braixen quite hard since its defense stat is quite low besides its weakness to Rock type.

For moveset, Delhpox have Mystical Fire and Flamethrower as his Fire type move. Personally, I would recommend Flamethrower as it has higher attack base. Although Mystical Fire can lowers opponent's Special attack, it is pretty useless as Delphox can nearly one hit KO any opponent with Flamethrower as long as they don't resist Fire type move. Delphox can also access to Psychic, that is like the strongest move for Psychic type that can hit a lot of Pokemon really really hard especially for Fighting and Poison types Pokemon. However, Delphox has really limited moveset, it is unable to learn any other type of moves other than Fire and Psychic which is quite a huge drawback for Delphox. For Technical Machine, Delphox can access to Solar beam like almost any Fire Pokemon, which is a Grass type move that deals 120 damage. This can be used to counter Water, Rock and Ground type that Delphox is weak against. Delphox can learn Sunny day which turns the field to sunny weather for 5 turns. Within the 5 turns, any Fire type moves will be strengthen while Water type moves will be weaken (which sounds perfect to Delphox). Not only that, Delphox can now use Solar beam without charging a turn.

Froakie the Water Type Pokemon

A frog-like pokemon which will later evolve into Greninja, a Ninja frog Pokemon. Greninja is a Water/Dark type Pokemon which is similar to our Gen 3 Sharpedo. Among the 3 starters, he is my favorite Starter due to his appearance and his flexibility.

For typing, it has some weakness such as Grass and Lighting (due to being Water type), Bug, Fighting, Fairy (due to being Dark type). However, it is totally immune to Psychic type move which will be very handy in the 7th Gym which is specialized on Psychic type Pokemon. So what do you expect from a ninja? Yes, a very HIGH SPEED. Yup, a very ridiculous high speed. In fact he is the FASTEST fully evolve Starter Pokemon, even faster than Sceptile and Serperior, and it is also the fastest Water type Pokemon. So basically you will outspeed nearly any Pokemon in game even though your level is lower than them. Greninja also has a quite good attack and special attack, but in return he has a  poor defense and special defense. Meaning to say, Greninja can't endure a lot of hit, in fact 1-2 hard attack will enough to bring him down. Therefore, the users for Greninja must be aware of its defense. Basically it is recommend to KO your opponent before your opponent get the chance to attack him.

Greninja has a very interesting move set, as he can access not only to Water and Dark type moves, he can also use other types move, such as Extrasensory which is another solid Psychic type move used to counter Fighting type Pokemon that can hit Greninja hard due to its weakness. For water type move, his signature move is Water Shuriken which is a priority move that hit 2-5 times in a row. Personally I don't think it is very useful, sadly. I will still recommend you to use Surf/Scald or Waterfall depending on what you want Greninja to become, either a Physical Attacker or Special Attacker. As for Dark type move, he can only access to Night slash, which is pretty disappointing. However, luckily, with the Technical Machine,  he can also access to Dark Pulse. Both Dark type moves are pretty nice depending on your Greninja whether it is a Physical Attacker (Night Slash) or Special Attacker (Dark Pulse).

Like I mention above, Greninja is very flexible as he can learn a lot of Technical Machine such as:
Special Attacker

  • Ice Beam- Used to counter Grass type Pokemon, like any Water type pokemon.
  • Grass Knot- Used to counter another Water type Pokemon.
Physical Attacker

  • Earthquake- Very useful against Horde encounter as it attacks all Pokemon at one time. It can also be considered the strongest Ground type move.
  • Acrobatic- Used to counter Grass Type Pokemon. It will deal high damage if Greninja is not holding any item.
Conclusion:
If you like to have a steady Pokemon, hit hard and have a high defense, you can with Chespin.
If you like to have a more well-balanced Pokemon, you can go for Fennekin.
If you like to have a One-man show Pokemon, you can go for Froakie.

Mega Evolution

Okay~ Before you want to Mega, you should start hunting the stones first!

Stones that you should already have:
Starters' stones (Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur)
When you get your 2nd starter, you should have one of the stone that matched your starter. The other 2 can be bought in Lumiose City at a high price if you aren't stylish enough. ;)

Blazikenite
The only way to get it is by downloading the hidden ability Torchic in the event through wifi.

Aerodactylite
Talk to the Professor at the right side in Fossil Lab, Ambrette Town.

Lucarionite
Receive together with Lucario from Korrina at the Tower of Mastery.

Gengarite
Talk to the creepy looking girl in Laverre City. You will get it for free.

Abomasnowite
Talk to the Abomasnow you saved from Team Flare in Frozen Cavern.

Ampahrosite
From Coumarine City. head towards west to Route 12. Then surf through the water there towards the north. You will eventually see an old man with a fisher at a small island. Talk to the old man and he will give you the stone.

Locations of the Remaining Stones in POST GAME:
Tyranitarite
Inside Cyllage Gym around the back area.

Gyradosite
Coutiway Town at the waterfall area.

Medichamite
Laverre City in between the well and the lake.

Alakazite
Enter Reflection Cave from Shalour City. Find the stairs heading downward twice so you can end up at B3F. Once you are at B3F, you will notice a dead end at the north side. But pay attention at the mirror, there's an entrance. Enter the entrance, and you will find a room with Gyroball TM. Then go further south then west, you should see another entrance. Enter that entrance and your Alakazite should be waiting for you under the light.

Pinsirite
Enter the Santalune Forest from Aquacorde Town at the north side. Once you reach there, it should be just around the top area there hidden in grass.

Banetite
From Santalune City go to Route 22 which is on the east side.Go all the way to the east till you see the gate to Victory Road. Before you enter the gate, notice there's a river on the south? From Dendemille Town go to Route 15, then head south to Route 16. The Manectite is located in the "playground" for two roller skater skating around the boulder.

Garchompite
It's located at the outdoor in Victory Road. If you have already pushed all the boulders into the holes, it's not hard getting here. You will need Rock Smash TM to smash the cracked rock, if you haven't smash it during your way to Pokemon League. Fly to Pokemon League and head to the Victory Road from there. The moment you reach the outdoor area, the place you battled with your rival, you have already reached the map.

Kangaskanite

Post-Game Story

There’s nothing much in the post-game for this series. After you have beaten the Elite Four, you will be sent back to your home. At the entrance, you will meet Shauna who is willing to trade with you ANY pokemon for the starter she choose. Keep in mind the starter you received has suitable nature and IV.If you receive Fennekin, it will be Modest with Sp.Atk IV max. If you receive Froakie, it will be Timid with Spd IV max. If you receive Chespin, it will be Adamant with Atk IV max. If you don’t feel like taking the starter yet, you can leave her alone. She will stay there as long as you play the game.

Now, you will be asked to go to Lumiose City to meet Professor Sycamore. At Lumiose City, you will need to go to Lumiose Station which is located at the north side of Lumiose City. Sit cab if you can’t find it, it might be expensive but you will be able to increase your “stylishness”.  At the station, you will receive a TMV Pass from Prof. Sycamore. Now, you will be able to go to the new town which is called Kiloude City.

Once you have reached Kiloude City, you will be required to participate in the Battle Maison which is located at the middle of the city. All you need to do is finish one battle, and quit from the participation. Now head toward the lake side at the north, you will see your rival there. This will be your last battle with your rival with her/his name “ace” pokemon, Absol. Once you have beaten her/him, you will receive Absolite. She/He will then ask you to meet Prof. Sycamore at Anistar City. Now fly to Anistar City.

At Anistar City, head toward the north side where there’s a large purple crystal. Talk to Prof.Sycamore there, he will upgrade your Mega Ring and mention that there are still a few number of Mega Stones hidden in Kalos. You will be able to see them sparkle around 8pm~9pm (1hour). So now, let’s start hunting Mega Stones!
