A mole-like Pokemon which will later evolve into Chesnaught (Grass/Fighting). Personally, I think Chespin is the hardest Starter to use among the three. The first gym you will face is the Bug gym and Chespin will surely have a hard time when challenging the first gym. Chespin family line focus on high atk and has a pretty solid def, but not special def though. Its speed is average. Meaning to say, Chesnaught will be outspeed by most opponents unless its level is higher than them.
As for typing, Chesnaught have a lot of weakness. That's Fire, Ice, Poison, Bug, and Flying. Worst part is, taking Fighting as a secondary type, his weakness to Flying is x4. Which mean, most Flying type move can One Hit KO him even if his Def is high. However, Chesnaught can use Grass and Fighting moves which can hit a lot of opponents hard. Grass type move is very useful against common types such as Ground, Rock and Water, while Fighting type is useful against Normal type which is very common in game.
For moveset, Chesnaught have Seed bomb and Wood hammer as his Grass move. Both are also pretty solid moves. Wood hammer can hit harder but in return Chesnaught will eat the recoil damage for each attack.
For Fighting move, Chesnaught can only use Hammer Arm which also hits pretty hard but will reduce its speed after he attacks. You might not want to bother about the drawback as its speed isn't that fast to begin with. Or maybe, you can teach Chesnaught Brick Break TM as a replacement
.
.
Other moves Chesnaught can learn is:
- Body slam- A Normal type move which is quite strong and have a additional effect that make opponent paralyzed. (Since paralyzed can slowed down opponent Pokemon speed by 75%)
- Bulk up- Increase his attack and defense by 1 stage. (which is 50%)
- Spiky Shield- Chesnaught Signature move. It works like Protect which is a priority move which protect Chesnaught for 1 turn but it gives additional 1/8 damage to opponent if the opponent uses Physical attack.
- Giga Impact- Physical version of Hyper Beam. Same with Hyper beam, it needs recharge one turn afterward.
Technical machine
- Earthquake- Pretty solid damage that can counter your nightmare, Fire type Pokemons.
- Power up punch- Another alternative fighting move if you don't like Brick break or even Hammer arm. This will increase Cheanaught Attack each time he uses the move.
- Dragon Claw- Use to counter the almighty Dragon typw which can resists Grass moves.
Fennekin, this fox-like Pokemon will later evolve into Delphox, which is a Mage-like Pokemon that has Psychic type as his secondary type. This makes its Fire/Psychic types combination to be interesting. Delphox has a pretty solid Special Attack, Special defense and Speed stat while the other 3 stat are below average.
I would say that Fennekin is the most easy to use among the 3 starters. This is because 4 out of 8 gyms are weak against Delphox, which is the 1st gym Bug, 3rd gym Fighting (assuming that you evolve Braixen to Delphox at this point which is not hard to achieve), the 4th gym Grass, and the last gym Ice. Moreover, there are 2 other gyms which are not effective against Delphox, that is the 6th gym Fairy and 7th gym Psychic. Both of these gyms deal less damage to Delphox as it resists them while Delphox can still deal normal damage to them (not super effective though). This is due to Delphox resists Fairy type (due to Fire type) and Psychic type(due to Psychic type). The hardest Gym for Fennekin should be 2nd, that is the Rock type gym which can hit Fennekin/Braixen quite hard since its defense stat is quite low besides its weakness to Rock type.
For moveset, Delhpox have Mystical Fire and Flamethrower as his Fire type move. Personally, I would recommend Flamethrower as it has higher attack base. Although Mystical Fire can lowers opponent's Special attack, it is pretty useless as Delphox can nearly one hit KO any opponent with Flamethrower as long as they don't resist Fire type move. Delphox can also access to Psychic, that is like the strongest move for Psychic type that can hit a lot of Pokemon really really hard especially for Fighting and Poison types Pokemon. However, Delphox has really limited moveset, it is unable to learn any other type of moves other than Fire and Psychic which is quite a huge drawback for Delphox. For Technical Machine, Delphox can access to Solar beam like almost any Fire Pokemon, which is a Grass type move that deals 120 damage. This can be used to counter Water, Rock and Ground type that Delphox is weak against. Delphox can learn Sunny day which turns the field to sunny weather for 5 turns. Within the 5 turns, any Fire type moves will be strengthen while Water type moves will be weaken (which sounds perfect to Delphox). Not only that, Delphox can now use Solar beam without charging a turn.
A frog-like pokemon which will later evolve into Greninja, a Ninja frog Pokemon. Greninja is a Water/Dark type Pokemon which is similar to our Gen 3 Sharpedo. Among the 3 starters, he is my favorite Starter due to his appearance and his flexibility.
For typing, it has some weakness such as Grass and Lighting (due to being Water type), Bug, Fighting, Fairy (due to being Dark type). However, it is totally immune to Psychic type move which will be very handy in the 7th Gym which is specialized on Psychic type Pokemon. So what do you expect from a ninja? Yes, a very HIGH SPEED. Yup, a very ridiculous high speed. In fact he is the FASTEST fully evolve Starter Pokemon, even faster than Sceptile and Serperior, and it is also the fastest Water type Pokemon. So basically you will outspeed nearly any Pokemon in game even though your level is lower than them. Greninja also has a quite good attack and special attack, but in return he has a poor defense and special defense. Meaning to say, Greninja can't endure a lot of hit, in fact 1-2 hard attack will enough to bring him down. Therefore, the users for Greninja must be aware of its defense. Basically it is recommend to KO your opponent before your opponent get the chance to attack him.
Greninja has a very interesting move set, as he can access not only to Water and Dark type moves, he can also use other types move, such as Extrasensory which is another solid Psychic type move used to counter Fighting type Pokemon that can hit Greninja hard due to its weakness. For water type move, his signature move is Water Shuriken which is a priority move that hit 2-5 times in a row. Personally I don't think it is very useful, sadly. I will still recommend you to use Surf/Scald or Waterfall depending on what you want Greninja to become, either a Physical Attacker or Special Attacker. As for Dark type move, he can only access to Night slash, which is pretty disappointing. However, luckily, with the Technical Machine, he can also access to Dark Pulse. Both Dark type moves are pretty nice depending on your Greninja whether it is a Physical Attacker (Night Slash) or Special Attacker (Dark Pulse).
Like I mention above, Greninja is very flexible as he can learn a lot of Technical Machine such as:
Special Attacker
- Ice Beam- Used to counter Grass type Pokemon, like any Water type pokemon.
- Grass Knot- Used to counter another Water type Pokemon.
Physical Attacker
- Earthquake- Very useful against Horde encounter as it attacks all Pokemon at one time. It can also be considered the strongest Ground type move.
- Acrobatic- Used to counter Grass Type Pokemon. It will deal high damage if Greninja is not holding any item.
Conclusion:
If you like to have a steady Pokemon, hit hard and have a high defense, you can with Chespin.
If you like to have a more well-balanced Pokemon, you can go for Fennekin.
If you like to have a One-man show Pokemon, you can go for Froakie.
